THE decision by trainer Peter Moody to retain a share in promising youngster Pillar Of Hercules looks set to reap big dividends this spring after he won the Veolia Environmental Handicap (1509m) yesterday.

Moody bought the son of Rock Of Gibraltar for $475,000 and he and his wife, Sara, retained a large shareholding in the chestnut colt.

Yesterday's victory only recouped $31,500 of the outlay, but there is the promise of bigger dividends to come in the rich three-year-olds' races over the carnival.

"He's an improving colt whose always shown real good ability," Moody said.

"He's just needed to get out to this trip on a dry track to show his wares. Hopefully this is the start of better things to come."

Moody was so impressed with Pillar Of Hercules he went back to the sales this year and bought his half-brother, by Lonhro, for $300,000.

Pillar of Hercules ($6) came from just off the speed yesterday to win by 11/4 lengths.

Moody will now step him up to the group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on September 28.

"I think there are better races in him. I don't know about the Victoria Derby - he may be a tad brilliant for that," he said.
