BILLIONAIRE owner Gerry Harvey's decision to bring his promising mare Dancesteps back to Pat Webster's Randwick stable paid dividends at Canterbury yesterday.
It was the four-year-old's first run for Webster since May last year. The Danehill mare had her past two starts for Melbourne trainer Rick Hore-Lacy, but Harvey decided to hand her back to Webster this campaign. Dancesteps was first-up in an 1100-metre handicap yesterday after she finished fourth at Geelong on October 5. Hugh Bowman rode the mare to perfection, making his move from fifth at the 400m and holding off the fast-finishing Loulou ($4) by three-quarters of a length, with the $3.10 favourite A Sweet Treat 11/4 lengths away third. Dancesteps tightened from $4 in to $3.40. "That was a great effort today. She is a very capable type, and I'm glad Gerry thought she goes better here [Sydney]," Webster said. Meanwhile, the Ken Callaughan-trained Bavosa threw down the gauntlet to her rivals in next month's Goulburn Cup with an impressive win in yesterday's Golden Slipper Day Handicap (1580m). It was the second win in a row for the mare after she scored in the Narooma Cup (1650m) at Moruya on January 8. AAP
